There are comptia and pdi+ exams available on my ricoh which when completed give you the option to buy certification from comptia.I've passed these, but don't feel the need spend cash unnecessarily on an expensive piece of paper

Do you feel like it was worth getting?
To my mind, the PDI exam is nothing that drastically different than what's covered in Ricoh's core basics class. The primary value I can see is in validating your skills with MFP's and printers to an outside company, like a tech firm or someone that doesn't generally deal with the devices.
