MPC2500 add toner - black, already replace toner pump

customer called for add black toner, had just replaced toner 2 weeks ago so it was barely used.
toner icon on screen showed 0 bars, turned off toner detect and printed counter sheet very light gray.

went ahead and replaced black toner pump and brand new oem black toner.
toner icon still shows no bars for black toner, other colors are registering fine.
it did not tone up and still printing gray.

did I approach this backwards and it is just not reading the toner chip so it won't add toner?
shouldn't the new toner be reading 5 bars regardless or the toner pump?

Did you turn toner detect back on? If toner detect is off, the chips is ignored and depending on the machine it may show no bars. A couple of things to check:
    • When you replaced the pump did you also replace the hose from the toner bottle nozzle to the pump? They can clog. Ricoh recommends replacing as a set.
    • After the light print did you try executing forced toning to see if the image density came up any?
    • You might have a clog in the toner bottle nozzle assembly. Disconnect the hose and place a rag or paper towel below the nozzle. Pulse the toner bottle. You should get toner coming out of the nozzle and onto the rag or paper towel. If the nozzle is clogged above the toner out sensor, the one right above the hose connection, the machine will display toner out or no toner. Turning off toner detect will allow either 50 or 100 pages before it displays toner out.
    • You could have a bad toner density sensor on the development unit.

yes I turned it back on before I replace the toner pump and installed the new black toner.

that is why I was wondering even without replacing the toner pump, shouldn’t the new toner have registered 5 bars as soon as it was installed?

(I will check the other items you listed, this being a 2500 I only replaced the pump and not the hose, so that may be next)

Had this happen with Magenta a couple years ago. Replaced Pump and Hose to no avail, and machine would fail everytime for ACC. Ended up replacing the Development Unit and everything came around.

thanks but would that also cause the new black toner to not register 5 bars on the toner icon?

Probably the density sensor was bad.

    It's you dev clutch

Had this happen many times from the MPC4500 all the way to the MPC5502

Replace the clutch located in the drive unit, will fix your issue 100%

I will guarantee the clutch shaft has rust all over it so scuff it up with sandpaper before you put the new clutch in

Thanks, I am going back with a developer unit and clutch. But I am still not understanding why the new black toner does not register as full when I installed it?

Depends on what message you have determines what action you should take.
Toner depleted or toner not set are two differant issues.
Set the toner detect SP back on, power cycle.

What exact message do you have?

Yes I set toner detect back on before I replaced the pump and new toner.
it never had a “toner not set” message.
it just said add black toner and the icon in the bottom of the screen shows no bars, even with the brand new toner I installed, and the toner that was initially in there was still nearly full and reading zero bars.
