I've run into that on a few occasions myself, and was forced to setup FTP.
As for the customer "preferring it be the same".....what's different as far as they're concerned other that the path displayed on the screen when they touch their name, and a small program running in the background that that will never bother them?
Otherwise, the process is identical. In fact, in offices that I have 4 or 5 individual PC's to scan to rather than a server, I prefer FTP, because it's unaffected by password changes, and/or windows updates that seem to change network settings and screw up SMB on a more than regular basis these days.
FTP is a much more stable process (for me anyway) in these situations
