Is the separation roller in feeders supposed to spin backwards?

I have a couple of C3003 feeders I was having issues with (double feeding). I have always believed that the separation roller wants to spin backwards unless there is friction from the feed roller or just one sheet of paper going through, but on the two I have, when I spin the gear that sep roller is on it doesn't move the sep roller. Am I losing my mind. (it is possible)

If your having Double sheet feeding replace all the feed tires? Usually you can't test, only cleaning, if cleaning has not fixed replace them. Also one way bearing or torque converter

Yup, I changed everything. One is double feeding, the other had the problem with the optical sensor, but neither of them appear to drive the separation roller.

The one with the sensor problem doesn't double feed though. It "appears" to work normally.

With the 3 tire system, the separation should follow the feed without paper or with 1 sheet. With 2 or more sheets it will stand still or reverse.

I don't know about this DF, but most of the newer ones have a slotted adjustment for the separation pressure. Tightening the spring makes the separation follow more, loosening the spring makes it follow less. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Sounds to me like you have a bad torque limiter.

I swapped that out though. When I turn the gear the shaft is attached to, the shaft does not spin in either direction. Maybe I should make a video...

You may have a bad shaft reverse roller sub-assy D6831632 or gear reverse roller D6831635. Most likely the single D on the gear has gotten rounded out.

New firmware suppresses the reverse rotation when motor stops causing j63 jamming.

Just a couple corrections to this "Technicians" post. Must not be an English speaker.

Actually he is an American citizen from Florida. According to his profile he has been in this business almost as long as I have. His biggest problem is that he is a liberal. If you have a problem with him, either use Private Messaging or use one of the political posts he follows in Rants Raves and Everything Else.
