What is the difference between different driver types like PS or pcl or postscript drivers.which one is for what purpose.

That is a complicated answer and you would be best to just google several resources.

And it has changed over the years. One difference that has always stuck in my head is how it handles fonts.

PS is vector based. With postscript it deals with the size of the font using programming to increase or decrease the font so it doesn't take much space to store all fonts.

With PCL there is a copy of each font in every size so it takes more space but less programming that is not needed to create it on the fly.

But because of the extra coding needed for PS to calculate the font size the programming itself can be a memory hog.

But there are many other things and both have evolved over the years with there different versions.
