We had one of these come in with no hard disk or cable. I installed a new 60GB drive formatted to 40GB. Since I did not have a cable I used one from a C250. The hard disk is installed under options but under state confirmation is is listed as "unset". I can put this drive and cable on the C250 and format it both physically and logically. Does the 420 have to have a special cable? I am just not understanding why it continually says unset and will not allow me to check or format the drive.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

9. Touch [OK] on the touchscreen.
10. Press the Reset key to return to the normal screen.

There is no option #6 for HD format under security. Only #3 Network Function Settings. I am assuming this is because the HD is "unset"

Here is the installation procedure... did you go through these steps?
Turn on the machine's sub and main power
switches.
2. Press the “Utility/Counter” key.
3. On the [Utility/Counter] screen, touch
“Details” and press the keys in the following
order [Stop]+[0]+[0]+[Stop]+[0]+[1] to enter
[Service Mode].
4. Touch “System 2”.
5. Touch “Option”.
6. Select “Installed” of HDD and touch “OK”.
7. Turn OFF the Sub and Main power switches.

Yes I did that. It is listed as installed under that screen. The copier prints and scans. But under the state confirmation screen is says "unset" and I can not check or format the drive.

Try this:

10.5.4 Trouble Isolation
When each function (device) is in trouble, isolating a trouble allows the limited use of this machine.

A. Procedure
1. "Service Mode screen"
Press [System 1].
2. "System Input screen"
Press [Trouble Isolation].
3. "Trouble Isolation screen"
Press [1] or [2] to display an item and set the isolation by [Set] or [Unset] of each item.
4. Press [END].

Try this again, if no good then I would assume that the HDD is not compatible,
the 420 uses HD-503/505 while the c250 uses HD-501

V.HDD Formatting
Step
1. Turn on the machine's sub and main power
switches.
2. Press the “Utility/Counter” key.
3. On the [Utility/Counter] screen, touch
“Details” and press the keys in the following
order [Stop]+[0]+[0]+[Stop]+[0]+[1] to enter
[Service Mode].
4. Touch “State Confirmation”.
5. Touch “Memory/HDD Adjustment”.
6. Touch “HDD Format”.
7. A prompt will appear to format a HDD or not.
Touch “Yes.”
Note: Do not turn the power OFF during
HDD formatting.
8. When the formatting is completed, make sure
to turn OFF and then turn ON the Main and
Sub power switches.

Hi blaze,
i'm sure that if an item has set a trouble isolation, the machine always forget it...

Check DipSW 19 Bit 3 = 0
Format HDD.

SW 19 bit 3 is set to 0. And yes I can not use the format function as the machine sees the HD as unset. Therefor those menu options are not listed. I have used a hard drive out of a C250 on the last 420 I just refurbed last week so I know they are compatible. I have done both a physical and logical format of this drive in a C250 but it still shows up as unset in the BH420. The only difference I can think of is that the cable that comes on the 420 has a slightly larger connector on the HD connector end which covers the slave vs master vs cable select settings. I would guess that the drive should be set as master. If this is the case then having the pins left open with no connector would be the master setting so there should be no issue.
Thoughts?

firmware was not mentioned yet, so I'm wondering what level we are at

Compare the pictures. I'm sure you recognize the difference.

C250:
14530

420:
14531

Thanks for the pics. I suspected that the cables may be different. Have one on the way so we will see in a couple days.
Thanks!

Update: Still not working. I received in a hard disk and interface cable that had been removed from a working BH500. Now the machine will allow me to use the Format HDD function but after taking 30 minutes to format and after powering off the machine still says "unset" in the state confirmation screen. Also when logging into the copier via web the HDD status just says Mbyte with no size or free space listed.

Anyone have any suggestions for me on this? I am figuring out that even with the Hard Drive listed as unset, everything works on the machine. The only function I can find that will not work is the scan to box feature. But I would like to get the hard drive functioning before it gets installed.
Thanks in advance!
