Was called out after user replace staples on 4/2. There was a misfeed message on screen. If you press the next scan/fax job button it also shows message to replace staples. The elevator tray section was raised up high. The staple unit came completely off track and the guide that holds the stapling edge of the paper came loose. Got all of that back on. Checked staple cartridge to make sure everything looked good. No change after this. Misfeed comes up at power on. There are no jam codes related to this. No other error codes since december. The elevator lift never moves or homes in.

Checked for paper in finisher. Manually ran a thick paper through it. Removed horizontal unit and disassembled it to check all paper paths. Inspected all sensors and cleaned them. Look at sensor check and see that some sensors seem to work such as front finisher door and some elevator sensors. The ones that I noticed are paper passage sensors 1 & 2 (PS1 & PS2) are both showing 1 which SM saying happens when paper in blocking it. Found a knowledge base artical about a solenoid that switches the entrance guide that can cause misfeed jams with PS1 or PS2. I checked all of that. I measure continuity between wires to the board for PS1 and PS2 all good. I checked for pinched wires and checked all wires if they are grounding.

Anyone have any tip on this issue before I start replace boards and such. Spend the entire day on this machine and another tech with high experience joined me for 2/3 of this time.

Main unit works fine without finisher.

Check the connectors on the upper rear of finisher. If one is not in all the way it gives false jam messages.

Already checked every connector In could find. Sorry if I didnt post everything I did. Too much for me to list or sometimes remember. I was there for about 8 hours.

Check the white ribbon cable that runs internally from the stapler unit to the rear of the finisher. this will probably be damaged. uk part number 9j08605104 - reyb/2. this causes various faults including spurious jam codes and the stapler stopping out of position or with the jaws closed. also operation of the stapler will often cause jam codes. check this ribbon cable for damage, replace if necessary.

Double check the gate actuater located on the entrance gate solenoid. That can break and cause this fault.

I also think that's the problem.

As I stated originally I found that issue in knowledge base and already checked that out. The stapler ribbon cable seems like and interesting suggestion. If damaged and can cause these weird issues I could see it because they replaced the staples and the stapler came off track and I had to put the ribbon cable back in place where it is routed through the guides.

I've replaced enough of these to warrant having one on my stock. Had loads of problems with them.

Update as I went out to this machine today. Before I received any suggestions on the forum I had order the finisher control board per KMBS.

I replaced it and the misfeeds and replace staple cartridge message went away. Did a copy and the paper ran into the finisher exit rollers but no error displayed. I raised the top exit rollers by hand and now the paper goes into the alignment section which seems to work but the exit rollers never come down to spit it out the rest of the way. No code or jam error occurs.

So far I notice the tray lift does work, bottom exit rollers never rotate and top exit rollers never raise up. Seems paper conveys through the finisher until the point of exit. Two times out of many tries it did paper did stop at they entrance section but no jam error. I tried once doing a double staple job but the stapler did nother, again no error. PS1 and PS2 sensors now show a zero unlike with the old board.

I put the old board in to make sure enough that the misfeeds and replace staple cartridge message did in fact come back.

Put new board back in and it acts just as it did when after I put the new board in the first time. There is definitely a difference between boards.

Called back KMBS hotline. It was the end of the day and the customer closed up shop I talked the to support specialist. KMBS told me to try a firmware reinstall latest version to update finisher firmware. After that they think I might have received a bad board and then maybe the printer control board in the main unit that sends signals to the finisher.

If I do order more parts I am going to order the stapler ribbon cable and replace it before doing anything else.

Issue is resolved now. After replacing that finisher control board kmbs wanted me to flash firmware to that board but I had an issue with my cf card because my card reader apparently is faulty. After reflashing firmware everything is functional again.

This was a good read although it sounds was a result of many hours. I am glad there are techs like you out there that stick with it and actually try to figure out what the problem is (and then let others know). Thank you!
