Brother MFC 9560 CDW adf wont sense document and wont work.

Hi guys, i set the document in the adf and it copies from glass. nothing indicates that a document was sensed.
i opened it up to inspect the paper sensors and actuators. all are mechanically working fine.

i am not sure if this could be a adf ribbon cable issue? and i don't see that cable in the parts book. i have a MFC 9970 CDW adf assembly, but the book lists them both as different numbers, even though in the same parts book.

if i open the top adf cover, the display shows the panel is open.

the machine has about 16,000 copies.

if anyone has any input on this problem, i would greatly appreciate it.

    thank you, Jim

get the service manual... run the sensor tests on the ADF... more than likely the FIRST sensor is out of place.

    thanks Phil.
i'm loosing my brain. i will look for the manual sensor test page. thankfully the mechanical aptitude is still working for me. guess i was out of it after a weekend carrying on like a young man.

    Have a great day, Jim

Hi TSBservice. thank you very much for the info also.
i don't think i have that exact service manual, but Brother sim and service mode codes prior to the LCD icon display shared a lot of service codes. i will try 32 and see if i can test the sensor.
much easier that swapping it out.

    have a nice day, Jim

Hi guys, hope your enjoying a nice weekend.

i wanted to follow up and thank you all for the assistance.

the sensor test 32, i think it is listed as, is actually 31. and it was that way on another color MFC.

but the test showed no document sensed. so i replaced the sensor and walla, that was it.

in the old days, i don't think i hardly ever had a bad led photo sensor. so that threw me off. but since you helped me to find the sensor test, i will be likely better armed to fire off a much faster diagnosis in the future.

    thank you very much, Jim

Re: Brother MFC 9560 CDW adf wont sense document and wont work.

Up until about 8 years ago the only sensor failures that you'd see were caused by heat from the fuser, or being buried in toner or developer or paper dust or fuser oil.

Starting in around 2010 the Sharp 73 sensors that are used in a large number of machines of all makes and models were changed in such a way that they would cause logic lockups. The sensor would inexplicably stop changing state, then if you re-booted the device it may or may not resume working for a while. These sensors could be used for anything from a paper feed switch to a door switch, to a HP switch. At the time I was concentrating on Sharp products, but they can be seen in Toshiba, Konica Minolta and other models. We'd carry around bags of these sensors. If a feed unit in a paper base stopped working, and a re-boot resolved it instantly, we'd change all 20 sensors in that cassette base. If you didn't, you'd just get another opportunity to do it tomorrow.

About 3 years ago Sharp re-worked these sensors, and there have been much fewer of these failures. But I still carry the most common sensors for the Konica Minolta E Series, the Sharp 73's, some of the Toshiba finisher sensors, and my magical bag of miscellany (collected over a few years in the field).

I had just such an occasion just a few months ago in which a Kyocera finisher sensor had been replaced new, but was still not changing state at the finisher controller connector. This device had no finisher diagnostic modes. I dumped out my bag of miscellany and started swapping in each sensor that the connector would fit. The 38th sensor that I tried changed state properly, but would not fit the mount. The 50th sensor changed state and fit the mount. Success!! So I should have carried 50 new sensors to try? I don't have an answer for that question. Judging from the illustration, this probably would not have worked for you, since that application has two sensors mounted on a single PWB. Not universal by any means.

Sorry for the disconnected rambling. =^..^=

If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.

    Hi blackcat4866.
So, all those sensors either have slightly different specs, or a different p/j?

What we go thru.your diligence is very commendable.
That's what makes us great copier techs.
I love the work and the challenge.

    Have a great weekend, Jim
