Printer APIPA IP question - Is this printer acting as a server?

    Hello

Just want to say that everything seems to be working, I can print from the PC via USB and even send from my phone to the printer. All works:

However, I'm not clear on where the printer is getting this APIPA IP from that I'm seeing in the printer's display. Note: I use IP assignments on my router for port forwarding. With my old dell printer, I would reserve an IP address for it and the router would always assign 192.168.50.7 to that printer via DHCP.

Why am I seeing an automatic IP on the printer screen? It almost seems like the printer is acting as a server and making it's own IP address. That's what it sounds like from what I read in the manual. But I just want to be clear. My router has a reserved IP for the Brothers printer that I added with the Mac address, but the printer is not using it, it's using it's own APIPA and nothing for gateway.

    Model: Brothers MFC-L3720CDW

    Thank you

AFAIK APIPA is indeed "self assigned" - of course a proper DHCP config should overrule it. You can perform a network reset on that brother machine and give it another go.

    But check this first:

IIRC the options for TCP/IP adress can be a bit confusing - there is an "Auto" option but also "DHCP" - one might think "Auto" is equivalent to "DHCP".

Disable APIPA, we do it all the time.

Just for us dummies: What is APIPA? =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

Using APIPA to configure the IP address
Useless because of the range it chooses plus causes all kinds of issues. We disable it upon setup all time. Think of it like Marketplace in Konicas i-series

don't recall hearing of APIPA before. wouldn't you just turn off dhcp on the copier and set it to whatever static IP address that you want it to use on your server? im no network expert. i just wing it enough to make it work for print, scan, and email on the copier.

OMG. I can see why it's useless. It might work in an isolated situation where a printer is plugged directly to a laptop with a cat5 cable, without the benefit of DHCP it could choose an off-range IP. Even in this situation it's better just to set a static IP address and call it a day.
