Netbook my friend. Everything a tablet is but better. Around 300 bucks. Usually comes with Windows 7, but you can install XP with plenty of power left over. No CD player (neither do tablets, obviously), but 4 USB ports and external CD players are as low as 40 bucks.
I have an ASUS with 1gig ram and 150 gig hard drive.
Portable HDDs.
8G thumbdrive in the pocket for quick access and a little flat TB or better of Wouldn't-You-Like-To-Know-How-I-Do-It.
Backed-up, of course. Backup to the backup. And always have a third backup you forgot you had. HDDs are cheap. A crashed laptop is expensive.
But the king of storage is the Zettabyte drive between your ears.

I'm using my laptop less and my Android devices more out in the field.
Samsung Galaxy Tab - Rooted
HTC Desire - Factory Firmware
I'm consodering getting an Acer Iconia, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1v or a Motorola Xoom just for a larger reading area.
Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.
We all carry HP mini's. They can do just about everything once you can get past the small screen and keyboard.
