We run into this frequently on gmail accounts since last November or so. Google has updated their email security and are phasing out SSL 3 in favor of TLS. Port 465 is used for SSL, and 587 for TLS which is why the port change was fixing the issue. Think Google did another update last week as well and there's some workarounds for that too. Someone posted it in another thread on the Canon forums here earlier.
We sell multiple brands as well and when Google makes a change to their gmail settings it tends to affect all of them.
This issue seems to only affect gmail accounts Canon, i've got dozens of Ricoh machines still using gmail SSL on port 465 with no issues. (So far)
Let us eat, drink, and be merry, because tomorrow we may die!
