    irc3380 - black issues

    hi,

Need help on this....I have an IRC3380, approx 500k copies and 9 yrs old! I put in a new bk drum about a month ago, customer rang in saying bk hue all over prints. Arrived and bk hue all over prints/copies, but no image on the copy/print. No image on the drum/ITB. Replaced the bk drum again and machine came up with E020 for the bk. I cleaned the laser and upgraded to latest firmware, ver 66.02 DCON. After the upgrade, machine came up with a diff error, E067 primary roller. Replaced the ITB but no difference, still no bk image, hue has gone by now. If i do single colour copies, the image is perfect, cyan/yellow/mag all come out fine. I replaced the laser and now the image is there but very faint for 90 percent but one part is nice and dark (see image attached). Have also replaced the secondary transfer roller.

I put a mark on the drum and dev drives to see if they were rotating and they seem to be as the marks move. I am now looking at HVT 1 or 2 and or DC or main controller, I am thinking away from the Main because of the colour images being produced. I replaced the HVT 1 and 2, still the same, i replaced the DC Controller and DC driver pcb but the black image is still the same as it was. I am trying to get the customer to upgrade due to its age but dont think they are biting there....The only thing left is the drive assy and main con....any ideas???

Feel free to disregard this as I have not worked on Canon equipment for a very long time.
However, if I was troubleshooting that I'd check to see if there was enough developer in the black developer unit. That's what the pattern of the defect in the picture suggests to me anyway. And it wouldn't hurt to check the toner feed system for problems too.
Maybe developer bias or charge voltage/current?
(Bad aftermarket toner can cause that as well.)
Good luck, and sorry if this was a waste of time.

I think you're on the right track Iowatech. The diagonal pattern of voids is a signature of a developing issue. What do the other colors look like? =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

    Hi,

Other colours are fine, I've changed the drum which has the dev built in? So unless it's a hopper fault as suggested I'm lost? It's OEM toner.

One time I had the tape that you pull to release the developer snap off half way. It must have blocked some of the developer from getting where it needed to be and looked like this. I didn't notice it happening because only a small piece was left but it caused trouble. I managed to get it out but can't remember how. It must be 7 years ago

For what it is worth, I'd still check the toner feed system to make sure the proper amount of toner is being added. If the developer unit gets starved for toner, the drum will start drawing the developer material instead which can sometimes cause this to happen.
Kind of a long shot, but if time permits you may want to check the black drum's connection to ground too. If the drum can't be discharged by the laser it won't attract toner properly. That was kind of an issue with some of the older machines I've worked on.
