    Reviving Canon IR c5180

    Hey,

I just bought a used c5180. it was not tested and looks to have been sitting for a long time. i got it fired up and so far it has turned on and sort of works.
    Im having print quality issues.

The colors are all misaligned sometimes its worse than other times. And also the transfer belt has some roller marks where it must have been sitting in the same place for a while. and im thinking this is causing it to slip some.
Im going to disassemble the transfer belt assembly and clean it. as the inside is quite dusty with toner as its made some rough bumps during moving.

Im also having issues getting into the print settings with the attached fiery. it seems to be booting fine. (Fiery was removed prior to rough moves) but upon selecting print settings it gives a message about if this could take time and to check the connections if this takes long. sometimes it switches to please wait. but never goes into a menu. so i cant print to it yet.

Im hoping to get this thing working well.

Fiery units take F O R E V E R to boot into a usable screen. Never was a big fan of them.

If the machine's been sitting that long, you're likely to run into issues with the fuser unit, which WILL get very expensive ($1300-$1400). Those cannot be rebuilt/repaired in the field, and must be sent to Canon for refurbishing.

fusing seems to be good. and drums are questionable. the machine has 54000 copies on it. and its now deemed for home use.

i have a service manual for it but im having trouble finding the section on registration.

    how long is forever?

so i did some reading. and i think my first step should be to pull the transfer belt off and clean the rollers as it might be slipping. it has seemed to get better as more copies have gone through.

also any one have the recovery software for the fiery just in case?

    Probably forever.......
I'm thinking you will need to reload the system software on the Fiery, this model was infamous for crapping out. You could also tell the device is does not have a print server and just use the device alone to print, by changing the service mode setting.

Colour reg will be the ITB, on the prior model (IRC 3200) I would take the belt of the ITB and clean the rollers and was usually good to go. I never had that luck on this model as they must have made enough corrections that when it goes out it goes out. I never had many issues with this model unlike the 3200. If I remember I used to replaace the assembly nand reuse the belt, however I had customers to get running again as soon as I could so I never really tried to troubleshoot the ITB on it's own. Good luck!

U first need to print out a P PRINT
    shows Firmware ver.

imagePass H1, needs to be recognized in printer under
    INT-FACE/IMG-CONT - set to "3"

INT-FACE/IMG-CONT must be set to 3
Is the Interface Communications cable Attached from H1 To 5185❓
Is your Network Cable attached from H1 To your Network connection❓

    On H1>
    Crossover connector is lower bottom
Network connector is right above it
Next is USB, Next is Interface Cable

    1) Press (=>) displayed at upper right on the LCD of
    the connecting device.
    2) At the Control Panel, press [Printer]tab.
    3) Press [Printer Status/Settings].
    4) At the Languages Setup screen, select the name of
the language you want to use, and then select OK.
    Wait a few minutes.

    Input of password
When setting it up, the password input screen is displayed.
When the following password is input, Fiery.1 you can enter a
    setup screen.

In response, the machine will automatically show the
Settings menu. Be sure to at least select the following
and make the appropriate settings in the indicated order:
[Server Setup], [Network Setup], and [Printer Setup].
For more information, see Configuration and
    Setup on the User Documentation.

Once you have made the various settings
under [Server Setup], you will be shown a screen asking
you if you want to store the settings. Select [yes] so
that the system will be stored in memory. Unless you
have made appropriate settings in the correct order and
saved them, you will not be able to go on to the next
    item.
    Making Server Settings:
Make the appropriate settings including the name
    of the server.
    Making Network Settings:
Make the appropriate settings including port, protocol,
    and service.
    Making Printer Settings:
Make the appropriate settings including print
    queue.
Select [close] on the Settings menu. In response, the
    system will restart automatically.
When there is a difference in the network setting between
Main body and PS Unit, the system will detect
the difference to change the setting and a following
message will appear on the bottom of the LCD of Main
    body.
[Turn off the main power switch(on the main
unit's bottom side)] is displayed on the LCD.
Turn off the power supply. Turn on the power supply
    in ten seconds.
    Checking the Operation After
    Making the Settings
Print out a test page and a settings page as follows to
make sure that all settings have correctly been made on
the machine and its host machine and that all connections
    are normal:
    1) Press (=>) displayed at upper right on the LCD of
    the connecting device.
    2) At the Control Panel, press [Print].
    3) Press [Printer Status/Settings].
    4) Make the following selections on the LCD:function>
    print page>test page/configuration.

The Unit-H1 has its own power supply and AC power cable. To function, the Unit-H1
must be connected to the print engine and to a proper AC power outlet. The Unit-H1
will not start up until the print engine is powered on. Powering off the print engine
    powers off the Unit-H1 also.
Select the Printer tab on the print engine LCD, and then select Printer Status/Setting.
Select Functions from the print engine LCD.
Select Print Pages from the print engine LCD.
Select the Test Page, Configuration page, or other page from the Print Pages menu
If the Test Page prints, you know that the Unit-H1 is functional and that the connection
between the Unit-H1 and the print engine is good.

    Re: Reviving Canon IR c5180

to add on>>the 5185 print engine must appear in the list of printers on the network

H1>LED'S DIAG 2-digit display codes (any other error codes are for factory use only)
FF • Unit-H1 is not booting Check external and internal connections and cables.
E3 • DIMM is missing Install or re-seat the DIMM in DDR DIMM2.
    00 • Unit-H1 has booted and is
    functioning correctly
    No action required.

    Network
    Unable to connect to the
    network.
    • Network cable or connection
    is faulty.
    • Network is faulty.
    • System software is corrupted.
    • Ethernet interface on the
    motherboard is faulty.

    1. Check the cable connection to the Unit-H1 connector
panel and the network. Make sure that the cable is the
    correct type .
    2. If the network cable is the correct type and is properly
connected to the Unit-H1 connector panel, connect a new
network cable to the Unit-H1 connector panel.
    3. If the problem persists, have the network administrator
    check Network Setup.
    4. If the problem persists, make sure that the network
administrator has checked other devices on the network.
If other devices are not functioning, there could be a
    problem with the network.
    5. If the problem persists, reinstall system software.
Corrupt system software may cause the system to hang.
    6. If the rest of the network is functioning properly and the
problem persists, may need to check or replace the motherboard.

You may need to open H1 to see if everything/connectors/DIMM is seated ok/ & not loose
