    BAD HDD Imagerunner (advanced) 6255

    Hello all,
I have a friend that has the above copier. he is a Sharp dealer. i am an independent tech. apparently Canon wants 2K for the HDD. would some kind and benevolent canon tech be able to help us figure out an alternative route to get this machine back up into production. they have already spent over 400 just to have a canon tech that cannot obtain the advanced series of updates, firmware etc tell them the drive needs to be replaced. i dont have the error code and from what i am told the hdd is definitely bad. on a side note, if the portion of the hdd that was bad did not contain system files/partitions (or however canon builds them), is it possible to clone the drive using a traditional pc based cloning device (block by block)?

i understand that for a new drive he would need some application called system support tool along with a compatible drive and the necessary firmware. is that all? any way to get those?

Most likely an E-602 code... sub code is irrelivant at this point.

Cloning isn't going to happen. Canon uses a proprietary OS, and I don't think you can successfully clone the hard drive.

You can purchase a hard drive fron Hytec for about $90, but you will need a laptop/desktop with "Service Support Tool" installed, plus the most recent system firmware. If the tech is an AUTHORIZED Canon Tech, he can download all the software right from the eSupport page. I think $2 Grand is Canon selling you a hard drive with the operating system pre-installed.

Nothing against independent dealers (I work for one), but if you don't have access to the right software, you're just going to be spinning your wheels.

You can play and lose a week or you can call an authorized Canon. Like guitar say, buy new hdd and call a tech.
I believe in California will be no problems to find an authorized person.

SST not necessary. If you can get the firmware in USB form and do it at machine or use updater

You can't use Updater unless you've already got the operating system installed. USB works though....I'd forgotten about that option. I'm too used to using SST.

There are bulletins recently released about 602s. People replace hard drives unnecessarily...Meap apps(Uniflow is one of them) are causing excessive writes to the HDD causing these failures..usually 602-XX11. New firmware addresses this(apps need to be upgraded also). Sometimes though you need to replace it.

The best & cheapest option is to first reload the firmware the HDD may not actually faulty just the software corrupt?

If you are sure the HDD is dead (format it in Windows to confirm) replace it with an identical model number (plenty on eBay for peanuts)
