It looks like PCL drivers has this problem too.
UFR drivers do not exibit this problem though.
The imagepass does not support the UFR driver,
and it seems in most cases the UFR driver was the solution.
There is no other information on bold fonts, no patches, nothing..

    Good luck.

if the customer has paid for the imagepass and colour matching (even though its a business m/c not a graphics m/c) is more important instead of using the multi pdl setup then all you get is the PS and PCL. The nice thing about the imagepass is you can actually print a test page with the settings on it, that can be compaired to any Fiery rip. The UFR is a good driver too bad you can't use it with Fiery products. Maybe the secret with the UFR is that it splits its processing with the host computer and box, which may eliminate some issues, maybe it has its own profile embedded. Most of my setups have a fiery attached. anyways, in the end, the 'box' should work with all drivers

    Issue Resolved by replacing Laser!

Tech Support arrived this morning to replace the laser (they had replaced most everything else).
Drivers weren't the issue for us. The 5185s own internal test pages had the font and color issue.
There is a HUGE difference in the print quality now. We're back to using default settings on PCL and PS drivers. No blasting anywhere either.
    Crazy, huh?
Thanks Todd and Lee for hanging in there!

we tried swapping the lasers in our m/c to no avail. so we ruled out lasers. did they replace all 4 lasers (different batch) or just the Bk, and when you say internal pages, do u mean the pg tests....if so which one has fonts on it

Techs didn't indicate that there was more than one laser but if there was than I would guess they would have targeted the black one. We were using the Configuration Page and PS Test page as examples but all internal reports/test pages had bolder black text than you would expect. AND on the PS test page, the black circle was very dark and almost solid-looking instead of having that nice pattern down to the center (compared to the cyan, magenta and yellow circles).

I knew the box was broken...these machines have great resolution and copy quality...not the greatest color and don't run anything over 11 pt. thru it. The ufr driver does have the host computer do alot more processing then PS or PCL. The machine uses UFR internally. Everything sent to the machine is eventually converted to UFR internally. Use a UFR driver and bingo...fast print processing times.
