Have you tried going into service mode COPIER > FUNCTION > CLEAR > ERR (OK) and restarting the copier.

    Heres your answer

Go into service mode: COPIER OPTION ACC Then select OUT-TRAY or IN-TRAY (Depending on which tray you are trying to tell the copier you have installed) If it is the second tray on the S1 finisher then change IN-TRAY to 1. If it is the 3rd tray which hangs on the right side of the copier then change OUT-TRAY to 1

You don't have to do this for this paticular situation. I would'nt want you to be confuse or anybody else. This is not a error code.

The S1 is an internal finisher.....only 1 tray in it. To enable additional tray, yeah service mode. But S1 only has 1 tray

A trainee in the workshop fitted a S1 finisher and additional Finisher tray B1 to an IR2270. He did something wrong in the installation, and the message 'Finisher cannot be used' came up on the display. I checked the machine over corrected the mistake but the message still appeared. It was as if the finisher had disabled itself and entered a limited functions mode.

The COPIER > FUNCTION > CLEAR > ERR has helped me in the past with weird problems so I tried it and it worked.

Functions limited mode does disable finishing functions. When this happens there usually a error code associated behind this message, that's correct. This can also be turned off or on in common settings under additional functions/functions limited mode. Limited function mode is not a error code that needs to cleared by,Clear ERR.limited functions mode helps bypass the finisher so that the end user can still use the machine when there is a problem with the finisher.

Exactly...you don't need to do errror clear on finisher faults...has no effect whatsoever. If the finisher generates an error, it runs on limited functions(no processing just move paper thru). Like stated you have to turn limited functions off in user mode to get the finisher to work. If i get a weird running Canon the first thing i do is turn machine off,UNPLUG IT, then re-boot it. When you turn a Canon off at the power switch, it still is live.
