You are correct in that Scangear is Windows only and that there is no scangear utility for mac. Unfortunately you need to either use Windows on your mac somehow, only use Windows machines for scanning or fork out and get the Universal Send kit.

I feel your pain. I have some macs too and would love a scangear utility for mac. At least you have the option of getting Universal Send. Some older machines don't even have that option available.

There is no TWAIN driver for Mac OS X for the IR3570. So ACDSee won't work.

If your Mac is new enough (Intel processor and such), you can load Windows XP Pro, and boot into it using Boot Camp. Another possibility would be to purchase "Parallels", which would allow you to run both at the same time.

Of course, by the time you go through all that hassle, it would probably be easier to pick up a refurbed PC for $200 or so.

Yeah setting up a PC next to the copier is the cheapest option. All mac users can then use that PC (as much as they may dislike doing so) for scanning.

Plus the newer Mac OSes support SMB, so it should be a snap to share a folder on the PC without any issues.
