Don't know about this specific machine, but it should be in service mode. Should be something like go into Service Mode and select Copier > Function > Clear > PWD-CLR and press ok. Turn machine off using main power switch (may be on right side of copier, I don't mean the button on the control panel) and on again (wait 15 seconds or so before turning back on). Going into service mode is usually Additional Functions (has * on it) > 2, 8 > Additional Functions (again).

Once you've turned the machine back on the password should be cleared and you then have to make sure that Department IDs is turned off. Instructions for how to do this step should be in one of the User Manuals. When you are in user mode o have normal screen up for copying there should be a setting turn DepID on/off in something like Additional Functions > System Settings > Department ID Management.

If problem reappears there's probably something else wrong with the machine as well

Edit: Looks like Canon has a different procedure for this model. Found it using a quick google search. See http://www.copytechnet.com/forums/ca...de-ir1600.html

Use the procedure mentioned there. Which reminds me if you have a problem it's always a good idea to do a search. Chances are if you've got a problem someone else who uses the forum probably has had it as well.
