Any ideas what would cause a blurred image near the lead edge on this machine. Happens pretty consitent and pre fuser. Looks like ghosting. Have replaced drum cartridge and still the same result. Happens from all trays and bypass as well. Registration? Transfer?

SWAG. Blured image could be dirty glass - or somehow light is getting in.

Pull out your toner cartridge and with a flash light in hand, slowly close your top cover and peak in at those black belts just behind your transfer roller. Are they moving? Either the gears that drive those belts made noise and a previous service tech disabled them or the gears wore down so bad that the belts are not moving. The grinding noise is common in this model, and a savy tech might have thought that these belts really serve no purpose (especially since HP calls them small media/envelope belts in the LJ 2100, which is same engine) and honestly it really isn't a major issue unless your depending on this machine to be more than a fax machine. Most peeps don't care if their faxes have a light lead edge. Pretty sure this is your issue. Let me know what you find.

thanks canonhptech I think you might be on to something I have only spent about 15 mins at this call but hope to return tomorrow for a more thorough troubleshooting session. As I said before the jitter-ghosting is happening pre-fuser and the only three units there are reg trans/sep and those belts, seeing as I have already ruled out cartridge.
