The sensor is further away from the Drum and Devs, therefore less toner gets in. The sensor can't read through a piece of tape caked in toner, but if a small amount reaches the sensor (without the tape), it has more chance of obtaining a reading. Placing a piece of protective tape across the sensor, when the sensor can't read through toner-covered tape, is just one of the many stupid design 'features' Canon incorporated into this disaster of a machine.
I'm not suggesting that removing the tape a substitute for PMs, but it does help prevent E20-0081 errors.what about maintaining a PM sch. ??
Thankfully, these machines won't be around for much longer. We stopped selling them once it became apparent they were a pile of crap.
