First you need a compatible hard drive, then you load the system support tool on you computer, then you load and register the software for that machine, then you follow the upgrade procedure in the servce manual exactly. Or you just buy a hard drive with everything already installed. Try Hytec, they may have some.

You can only use certain drives which Canon supports; you can't use just any drive.

The SST will look for that list of drives when you go to run it, and will fail if your drive is not on the list.

Or, as Kuby said, you might be able to get a drive with the software preloaded from Hytec.

Note that these are all "notebook" drives.

You can use any HDD model from 10gb to 40gb. The important is sst and firmware.

I can't recall how many times I have replied to this same subject, but it is not as easy as some say it is, nor is it impossible to edit the format.ift file. You need Service Support Tool (SST), and the system software files to load into SST. Then the easiest way to be sure the hard drive is compatible is to Google search for the same model of hard drive already in the copier and buy that model. Or, simply pay too much money by purchasing it from Canon, or you can try NationWide, or Hytec.

As to how it is accomplished, search this site for the procedures. It has been discussed too many times to count.
