ir 2200 laser noise ,high pitch hum

Hi, I bought a used ir2200 it worked great, for about 6 weeks, then it produced blank pages, intermitantly at first then all the time, an error code E0000 002, we found it to be the charge board, after replacing it, the tech guy said he need to reformat the HDD, when he came back and installed everuthing back, it had this high pitched whine. The tech guy said it's normal, I said it didin't do it before you touched it.
He discovered it came from the laser motor.
    Why would this suddenly start?
    1. because the power board was weak?
    2. because he's done something wrong?

He said it should start like this and then slow down, but it doesn't.

    Any help please

    Regards to all

Chances are ,if its the laser its going to have to be replaced.
There's really no field remedy for this kind of problem.

If the noise is indeed coming from the laser , then I agree with Screwtape -it will need to be replaced. Probably just wierd timing that it is failing around the same time as your repair. That , of course, is assuming the noise is coming from the laser. I have had a lot of hard drives make a whining noise before they fail also.
Doubtful that your tech was doing anything in the laser area that would cause it to fail.
On the other hand-he did feel a need to reformat the hard drive which makes me wonder if the drive was having problems.
Bottom line- it is hard for me as a service professional to criticize your tech without knowing him or the quality of the work he does. You have a used copier and things do fail as they get older (your copier is certainly older but a great model) whether or not you need a laser or hard drive. I wish you the best of luck.

If its the laser, it should stop when it goes to quiet mode. That timer can be changed in additional functions under timers/time until unit quiets down. I've heard plenty of whiny hard drives.

My thoughts exactly....makes me doubt the laser is the issue-sounds like the customer is describing a more constant noise.

Correct,, the hard drive never spins down till the unit is turned off! I think we have a quorum, and the most likely candidate is the hard drive. You might be able to find one of those MK2023GAS drives on Ebay....

Canon addressed that problem. The hard drives on the newer models do wind down. That was part of the reason that IR3300/2800/2200 hard drives fail so frequently. They never wound down. And that whining noise is a small bearing that finally gives out after so much constant movement.
