That's a good place to start. Disable Potential control in service mode.

Then see what you get running a copy. If copies are still black I would suspect a laser issue of some sort. If copies are ok - check or replace potential control pcb. Could also be related to corona or hvt but I doubt it. I'm leaning toward the laser as your trouble.

If you go into service mode Copier>Display>DPOT and see what VLT is reading (normally around 65~70 volts).
Next check VLM and what that reading is (this should be close to VLT).
If VLM is much higher than VLT ( such as VLM= 200 or 300) the Laser Scanner power is to weak, and could not bring the voltage down to correct target.

    Here's another one

Its a weird case but won't hurt to check.

Tray 1 Vertical feed clutch CL8 had metal shavings around it, causing electrical feedback to the machine.
Cleaning up the area and replacing CL8 resolved the black copies.

What's new...that clutch? Have you tried turning off Pot Control? What did the copies look like after that? If they are still black focus your efforts on a problem with the laser.
