What does MEAP stand for and what purpose does it serve in mfps?

MEAP - Multifunctional Embedded Application Platform.
Based on JavaVM, you can write your own (after giving Canon the rights) or buy an application to install and run on the MFP. From what I understand the common applications are for managing the device, custom scanning, or variable print data.

And I can't answer your question about CBS or e automate.

Yea, Ive heard that a couple of latest/greatest products can scan and upload to Google docs on the cloud. oooohhhhhhh aaahhhhhh Now thats all well and good if the basic functionality is solid.

Does this open the device up to be hacked?

IT, as it can for any device on the network, can open a portal limiting surfing to secure sites from particular devices, just has to come up with the rationale for a set of rules that can be applied without excessive administrative duties. Similar to print management - IT can accept aliasing or spoofing for a portal to get the benefits of managing a network of copiers. My company can base contracts for supplies on meter reads, to the extent the reading is done accurately, even make money. The big hurdle is getting the customer to see the benefits and not as a threat to the security of the network.
