First of all what is the max memory the board can handle? What are looking to accomplish? If it's Ripping time what is the application that is the challenge? Really more memory is a good thing. However B/W products dont need as much as colour. The only reason I see to mess with base memory is to try and resolve the above notes. If it Ripping time test another driver.

It won't hurt anything to try more memory. It will not boot up if it doesn't like the memory. Or it might only recognize 1GB.
512MB is standard for that model, and there are 2 slots so I would assume it can't address more than 1GB. But it won't lock you out with an error if that's what you want to know.

I would stick with 1Gb if that's the max. Even if it doesn't address the extra Gb I would stick with the factory on this one.

Never seen a document on 5570/6570 where u can expand standard 512mb, even though it has two slots/ would assume 1GB is max

There was a Firmware fix for field reported memory leaks,
    a while back
