Problem is definitely in upper unit. Replaced sensor, brackets dont seem bent, and shutter seems to rotate fine. Switched upper unit with another machine so I know its in the upper. Any idea what else in upper unit could cause this code?

Check if small piece of paper is stuck inside rear frame connector > that the fuser plugs into.
may be necessary to remove the Fixing/Feeder Frame Assembly to see and remove paper from the connector on the rear frame of the machine

+Check the harness going from shutter H.P. sensor

    don't forget to clear ERROR>>>>>>

if the metal plate where the shutter HP sensor (PS53) is attached ,
could be bent/deformed a little > will cause error 840-0001

The E840 code relates to a fixing unit shutter position error condition. The error code can be generated because the shutter motor is not moving the shutter to the sensor detect position or because the shutter position sensor is not detecting the proper movement of the shutter. In this case, the shutter motor had failed because the shutter did not move. The shutter movement was inhibited by a bent Rear Shutter Gear Stopper (Part number FC6-3528-000).

The pictures below show the improper position of the stopper.

The stopper is located on the rear of the Fixing Assembly pictured below.

I've already thoroughly inspected the connectors on the frame and the fuser. The code follows the upper fuser because I put it in another machine and got the code. Moved by hand and shutter moves fine. Watched it move at power up and seems fine also. I'm gonna play with it a little today. Will repost.

Wow who would have thought. I'll check it out. I have those rings and I think they're the new style.

Heres what i had done. I switched the upper unit with another machine. Mysteriously both machines worked. Now both have gone into an E840. Replaced the thrust rings. Everything moves ok. Has the upper unit been a problem where it has had to be replaced for this code?

Fixed. One wire at shutter hp sensor connected broken inside insulation. Not visible. Had to find it.
