check your paper feed assembly for deck #1 and the connector going from that P/U unit to the side frame of the machine.

Can you hear the deck lifting the paper up at all or do you close the door and nothing happens?

8500's have been around quite awhile,, I seem to remember something about the right door, and a steel foot on it that is supposed to press in on some plastic lever on the paper feed assembly that allows the pickup roller assembly to drop down.

The pickup assembly has to drop down for the paper sensing to work...

I have seen paper jammed behind the paper deck drawer and the pick up assy that can cause weird problems. Also I have seen a simple power cycle correct the problem.

No lifting sound detected. It only detect the paper if apply some pressure to the deck front cover.

Been a while but one of the white blocks on the deck drawer need to contact a metal plate when you slide it in. I've had to bend, excuse me, reform that metal plate down to make better contact. Had several machines do it.

I too have seen what Brian is referring to, usually occurs in drawers that have been slammed home, bending that release mechanism upward...

...and another for the bending the plate down. Seen that a few times. And the reseating connectors suggestion.

Another thing I've seen is a lazy flag on the feed unit. There aren't any springs on those sensor flags on the feed unit and I've seen a couple that the flag moved OK but just not freely enough.

Ditto both of these. If you are not getting any lift to the tray then the P/U unit does not know you even have the drawer closed. Check your guides and accuators to make sure everything is in the proper place.

yeah, I check it out and bend it to let the sensor sense it. Now it works like normal again. Thanks all!
