Here's a video clip of my pain in the ...IR550

I had my two boys watch the print run and they had a paper jam. They cleared it and when it started up againg it developed this knock.

Only when the machine starts up and runs through its warm up cycle and during a print. A rapid fire knock.

I have pulled apart the back, lifted out the developer units, looked for wear patterns, pulled the circuit board out and checked the components behind it. I've spent hours upon hours looking and I am stumped. so I took a video clip of it and thought maybe someone here has heard this before. I can't upload a video to this site so I uploaded it to my site, watch it here. Terrace Daily: Articles

Man, this happen after your techs worked on it? It can't be that difficult. I spend 2.5 hours on a damn little chirp squeak and you can't find an enormous rattling sound?

Sounds like gear mesh to me.

sounds like a metal plate rattling, when a roller is turning
pull the transport out, turn reg roller by hand, and see what happens, see if spring is stretched, or loose, check bushings.
or check the the sponge roller bearings in the pre-reg area

Thanks for all the responses. This knocking sound happens at a cold start up. As soon as I power it up and turn it on it goes through a cycle that this noise is coming from.

It doesn't have to be printing to start making the noise. I have opened all the paper cassettes just before starting and that made no differennce.

The paper didn't rip when it jammed but I lifted out the duplex tray and the entire transfer unit checking everywhere. I manually turned all the gears and rollers I could locate and get to but couldn't get any noise.

If I knew just what rotated first, or cycled first at the initial start, this would at least narrow my search down a bit.

What cycles first at start up?

Here is a pic showing the exact spot the knocking is coming from, behind the plate the tip of the screw driver is touching. Looks like a hell of a procedure to get into that area. ir 550 knock spot.JPG

It is hitting so hard there it almost moves the screw driver when I touch the metal plate.

problem solved Re: Here's a video clip of my pain in the ...IR550

Well i asked the boys, did the paper rip? and they said nope, just pulled out the sheets. The knock came because the gear driving the waste pick up auger couldn't turn and the gear snapped back as it had to or it would break. The auger wouldn't turn cause there was paper wrapped around it.

Here's some pictures. It took a while but I learned a lot, don't believe everything you're told is just one

    where noise came from off.JPGspring compressed.JPGpaper jam.JPGpaper removed.JPG

Thanks for all the ideas and help. Maybe me sharing these pics will help other newbie techs like myself.

I always told the boys, if the paper rips lay out the pieces and make sure you have every piece before you start it again.

This cost me two good days of production, I didn't have the time to keep looking steady for the problem.

On things for sure, I know a lot more about the machine. Good thing I have two more for spare parts!
