Information sharing about crossover and direct cables.

    Hi all of you

I would like to share the following information with all copytechnet readers:

1- With Windows XP, it is possible to use a crossover and a direct cable in a singgle network connection( a two machine network).

2- With Windows 7, a crossover is the only possibility. The direct cable will not work in a two machine network.

    Rachid.

I think this will not depend so much on the operating system being used but on the NIC's/Mainboards.....

Did you try to connect the two devices through a HUB or Switch when using the direct (straight) cable?
I think it should be able to work. Haven't tried it myself with Wins7.

It also depends on the hub or switch as well as the Nic's/mainboard (mentioned above) Some switches will auto sense and correct if need be.
But if you wanna go from PC (or laptop) straight to copier I always use a crossover.
Color is not 4 times harder... it's 65,000 times harder. They call it "TECH MODE" for a reason. I have manual's and firmware for ya, course... you are going to have to earn it.

Re: Information sharing about crossover and direct cables.

I have been using HP laptops now for the last 6 years and I no longer carry a crossover cable as my laptops have always auto sensed the TX \ RX lines correctly.

This goes for using both Windows XP and Windows 7 with both 32 and 64Bit versions.
Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.

Owl is correct. Newer high end nic cards auto sense the need for a crossover/direct connection. Some cheaper nics do not have this feature. The windows version is irrelevant here as it is the hardware itself that does the auto sensing.
