    Canon iR-C6870 dinosaur

    Hello people

today i had the misfortune of being asked to assess this extinct pre-historic dinosaur - it has 800k black n 500k color prints on it - the client has about a grand of consumables and would like to know if i can revive it Jurassic Park style & not just throw their consumables away with the beast

i ran a few hundred prints,, all seemed okay, nice solid blacks, no jams, no errors, but when i tried to run single colour copies, yellow n cyan were nice n solid, but magenta came out completely blank, not even a whif of color - i put a new magenta toner in it,, but still blank, i ran gradations (both) and no errors came up - i noticed no developer spillage anywhere

i didn't want to spend ages dismantling the carousel & removing the magenta developer unit without first doing some research - i found a service manual and am now reading through it all

it may be as simple as a broken dev drive gear, or depleted dev,, or poor dev unit seating, but i was hoping someone who is older than Adams' great grandfather may have the dim past-life memory of some experience with this thing, and may be able to guide me further without me wasting hours n hours researching

it seems if i got the magenta working, this thing may well operate long enough for them to use their consumables - they are looking to get a new machine, but would like to use this as a stop-gap in the meanwhile

any help would be very much appreciated

    Andy

Bury it. With those meter readings on that pig. Just bury it. Yeah could be dev. Go in service mode and check patch densties,ATR densities(on dev)...fun machine to work on. Canon's worst ever.

thanks mate,, my client doesn't mind burying the machine,, but they're baulking at throwing away 7 black toners n multiple of each color toners

i spent less than 30 mins doing a quick check over last visit, so i guess i'll remove the magenta dev n see what i see - if all they need is a magenta dev + 2 hrs labour, they'll probably want me to go ahead n do it

god help me - and them
