Canon Imagerunner 1025IF Out of toner error when toner is almost full

    Hello everyone,

I have a Canon 1025IF that has been working fine for the last 3 years. My problem started when after having recently replaced the toner, the message of "low toner" came up. We have not been using genuine Canon toner, I thought the toner I recently installed was defective so we replaced it with a new genuine Canon toner. After a few prints, the message came up again, sometimes it will be working well for a while after opening and closing the toner door, or turning the machine off and on. However the message was coming back again from time to time, especially after a long batch of copies, usually more than 20 in a row. I tried replacing the drum unit as it was due for replacement anyway, however I just rebuilt it, using a kit that comes with a drum replacement and a new cleaning blade so didn't change the whole thing (waste tank?) only the drum. This didn't solve the problem, and now even the "out of toner" message is coming up, and in this case stops printing at all when we know the toner should be nearly full. Opening/closing toner door, turning off and back on the machine, will fix it only temporarily. I've been trying to find information about this issue with no luck.

Any insight or advice on how to fix this would be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much!

There was another thread recently postet but i can't find it whit the same msg as yours...have a look.
Take off front cover and check/clean the white wire contact plates...inside developer unit there is an antena rod who measure the toner inside,it's a easy fix if you are an technician.

CHECK IF the Bias Spring is sitting in correctly.

Out of toner, Change toner is flashing

The problem has been found to be a poor contact between the Antenna rod, ( this is the device that detects the presence of toner in the developer), and the HVT PCB. There is a series of contact points to check.
In the image below check the contacts points on both ends of the white wire.

On the left side the wire terminal contacts a curved wire.

The back of this curved wire is spring loaded and contacts the developer unit. In the image below the black plastic housing has been removed. There is one screw at the top of the housing that holds it in place.

The image below shows the contact point on the developer. It is rectangular in shape at the top center of the image. Make sure the wire in the above image is lined up with the contact point on the developer.

Next check the contact point on the right side of the developer. It is a spring loaded contact plate.

Check and clean each contact point. Cleaning the contacts with scotch bright, emery cloth or fine sand paper may be needed.
The message will disappear when the contact failure is resolved

Thank you so much for the detailed explanation. I followed carefully your instructions, put everything back and the copier worked fine for the first 100 copies or so, then the message "Low toner" came up again, if I kept printing, it would do 10 or 20 more prints before showing the "out of toner" message. As before, opening and closing the toner door will get rid of the messages for a few more prints and repeating the whole cycle of "low toner" "out of toner" again. Since the problem seems to be triggered after the machine has been running for a while, I was wondering if "heat" could be a factor causing this malfunction. I still want to try a conductivity test with a multimeter to make sure the white wire makes contact with the developing unit, but I did clean well with sand paper all contact plates in the indicated areas. Is there anything else I could test/try? do you think it is possible I may need to replace the developing unit if the sensor is damaged? or can you just replace the toner sensor?

Thanks again, your instructions have been very useful and I'm enjoying getting to work on this

If your not getting bias applied to the unit the antenna can't pickup anything even if the unit is full of toner.
Put a meter on the dev bias line and see if your getting bias.

FOUND THIS ON THE GRID TALK
problem is in the connector to the right of the antenna wire.
          > shim this with something to put more pressure on the arm off of the dccon.to the clip.

Checked again with a meter and I think the dev bias line is not the problem. Now I am getting the "low toner" msg all the time. After turning on the machine, it takes more than normal to initialize, the typical sound of (gears rolling inside) is heard for a while, like if it was trying to detect or get the toner, then after long 3 or 4 minutes of trying, the "low toner" or "out of toner" message will appear. Any other thoughts of how to solve this? Sorry because of my lack of knowledge, I'm a teacher at a school with limited budget.

            Thanks!

I don't think so, just the normal sound it always do when initializing, I'm not familiar with the process but just the sound of things spinning inside. At this point the machine doesn't recognize toner at all anymore, so we can't print. If the connection is the culprit, what other things can I try? will removing completely the developer unit to clean etc. would help? or should I just keep trying with the white wire and its contacts. I really don't see anything that could be preventing a connection there. It appears well positioned, I even put an elastic band around to have more pressure in the right side contact. Any thoughts?

I don't have a new bottle at hand, but I could try to buy a new one. The one it is using now is an OEM genuine Canon product. Before, we've been using a different brand (LD) refilled bottles, they worked fine for 1 or 2 years, until this problem started. I wonder if the use of these non genuine toner could have damaged something inside?

UPDATE: I switched the toner bottle to the previous LD that was not empty either (only used for a few weeks), and I got it working again, no out of toner or low toner after turning the machine back on, then after 4 or 5 prints, shows the "low toner" msg. It didn't want to print anymore with the OEM Canon bottle... both bottles are nearly full of toner inside, I can tell by weight. I can also tell that the LD bottle and the Canon one are different physically in the outside, the LD is missing different parts that the Canon has, in the base with the gears, and on the sides. I bought this Canon bottle on ebay, it was cheap, perhaps from an old lot. Is it possible that the problem lies only in the toner bottles I've been using? Can these bottles if they are of cheap construction get damaged after little use?

for what it's worth, I had this recently. The customer ran out of toner and removed the bottle, and they spilled tonet all over. I tried a new bottle, etc. I took the new bottle, and removed the slot cover, and generally cleaned it and the toner receptacle in the machine. That seemed to work. I guess the trick is, to figure out if the mc is doing this because of it's own fault, or if a customer knocked something askew. You likely tried these basics, but this worked for me. Good luck, I despise these models.

I agree. (copytech,Mike) Make absolute certain that the toner you buy is 100% Genuine Canon toner that hasn't been stored
