=insufficient insertion of the reading unit connector.
Below is a snap shot of the RCON pcb if one were to look down on it
Try inspection & re-seating all connections of the Reader Controller,& Main Controller PCB & Reader & CCD

Replace the CCD flat cable, P/N FM3-7133-000

Hi, I found this post because i have the same error on a 3225. I replaced the CCD flat cable and tried reseating the other cables with the red mark in the picture and am still getting the error.
Im thinking the next step would be to replace the ccd or the reader controller. I tried clearing the reader cont and re-input the values but no good. Does anyone have any suggestions.
Thanks

that flat cable> sometimes looks like it's inserted properly> when it usually is not/ remove & re-check it
the connectors on both the RCON and Main Controller needed to be removed & re-seated.
make sure printer plug is out from wall outlet before action
?? does the CIS carriage unit move back when pulled out of position> & power is turned on

thanks for the suggestions The ccd cable I have checked very carefully many times how it is seated and both ends of the one from rcon to mcon also.
The ccd lights up and the carriage does move.
So Power on sequence is fine
Sequence at Power-On
- F: Scanner motor moves forward (toward right). ------>
- B: Scanner motor moves backward (toward left). <------
- Light-ON: LED on CCD unit lights-on.
- ON: When CCD unit HP sensor (photo interrupter type) detects.
what is your sub code ?
when does error e280-xxxx pop up ??
-using the ADF ??> press of start
-or using glass doc> press of start / or error from either selection

The sub code is 003. The led and movement sequence is good. The progress bar on the display when you power on moves a little bit and pauses for a while then it starts to move again and then throws the code about halfway before it finishes to get to the ready screen. I have tried to change the reader controller and the ccd unit and the cable between the reader controller and the main controller and still the same.
