    e540-8003

i am getting this code sporadically. when i get to the customers i cant get it to reproduce. when i go into he error log i can see tha this happens 2 or 3 times every few days. it is the only error in the log. i have already changed the upper paper place sensing flag. what is the next step to resolving this issue? thanks in advanced.

I have seen where the trays are too far away from the flags. Try adding a shim on the trays where it actuates the paper sensing flag.

    Finisher Model ?

    Finisher-T1 / Saddle Finisher-T2 / Finisher-AD1 / Saddle Finisher-AD2 / Finisher-AE1 / Saddle Finisher-AE2 / Finisher-Q3 / Saddle Finisher-Q4 / Finisher-AA1 / Saddle Finisher-AA2 / Finisher-R1 / Saddle Finisher-R2 / Finisher-Q1 / Saddle Finisher-Q2 / Finisher-Y1 / Saddle Finisher-Y2 / Finisher-N1 / Saddle Finisher-N2 / Finisher-W1 / Saddle Finisher-W2 / Finisher-H1 / Saddle Finisher-H2 / Finisher-AC1 / Saddle Finisher-AC2 / Staple Finisher-C1 / Booklet Finisher-C1 / Staple Finisher-B1 / Booklet Finisher-B1 / Staple Finisher-E1 / Booklet Finisher-E1

The E540-8003 error code indicates the Tray 1 closing detect switch MSW103 ( micro switch located under tray 1 ) is activated while the Tray 1 is operating.
In this occurrence, the Finisher will energize with NO tray movement then generate an E540 - 8003 error code. MSW103 checks good and is not actuated.
It was found that MSW102 ( Swing Guide Switch ) was in the Open state, non actuated. The spring on the white actuator was not connected causing the MSW102 to be in an open state.

    When MSW102 is open, this cuts 24vdc to FU105 & FU106 which supplies the 24vdc to J718 ( top tray ) and J719 ( bottom tray ).

A quick way to check MSW102 is from the Finisher Controller at J714 pins 3 (blue wire) & 4 (pink wire). Pin 3 should read 24v constant and pin 4 will read 24v when MSW102 is actuated, and 0v when MSW102 is opened. Both pins should read 24v on a working unit.
If pin 3 reads 24v and pin 4 reads 0v whether MSW102 is actuated or open, replace MSW102.

    MSW102 part number is FH7-6379-000
    Spring part number is FU5-2395-000

Note: For the purpose of this Knowledge Base article, we are referencing the Finisher-AD1 / Saddle Finisher-AD2.
Due to the range of Finishers covered in this Knowledge Base article, the safety switches maybe addressed by a different identification number. Please check the related Service Manuals & Parts Catalog for the correct identification.
