Canon Irc 3200 bad hard drive replacement

My Canon IRc 3200 displays the error code E-602-001. The hard drive cannot be detected. The front panel is blank. The hard drive is making the odd clicking noises and I can tell it's not behaving corectly. It definately is the drive. My copier is not on a service contract.

Can I replace the 40 gig hardrive myself with a drive from one of the computer supply stores? I'd the have the Canon service tech come out and initialize the new drive and load the ImageRunner 3200 software?

Ikon has quoted $800 for just a new drive plus the service call which seems crazy to me. Are they really trying to punish me for not having a service contract?

Do I have any options?

Your option is to go on-line and see if you can find the drive there. It may be difficult, but they're out there somewhere.

No, you can't just put any drive in the machine. It has to be formatted and encoded for the C3200. Some may know how to transform a regular drive, but I don't see it a lot.

Once and if you get the drive, call a trained Tech (meaning, someone that knows what they are doing), and have them install and configure it for you. Then kindly pay the gentleman\woman.

The drives are expensive, but I think $800 is a little over the top. I haven't had to buy one as of yet, so I'm not sure, but it will cost you.

You can use an off the shelf drive but you will need a tech to load system software on it.Some of the Toshiba drives will work but it is a pain if it is not on the list of drives acceptable to the machine.$800 is a lot to spend for just a drive and service call but i guess it depends on how bad you need your machine.

The bad news here is Ikon seems to have given you the full list price of the drive (from Canon).

My suggestion would be to do an internet search for the exact brand/model hdd that is already in the system (should be around $60 plus/minus). Then you will need to try and find a tech that would load the system software for you "on the side".

I cannot justify why Canon charges so much for their "authorized" hard drives, but they do.

Yes that may be the list that the support tool uses, and I cannot say for the 3200, but the "list" lies for the iR5000.

Up to you (and we all seem to agree you should get a drive from someplace other than canon) but I would still just get the same make and model as what is in the system now.

Finding someone that knows how to use the SST, has the latest system software, and cable to load the system may not be real easy so using a tech may be best in the long run.

but you can also edit the list! if you know the hdwn of you hdd.

but if this is (politelty) beyond you -how you going to operate the sst and load the sys f/w?

I only plan to replace the hard drive myself if possible. The formatting of the drive and installment of the Canon system software I'll leave to the Ikon Tech. I'm happy to pay $275.00 for the service call and software install. I was just hoping that I was not stuck paying $800.00 for a $65.00 drive.
