You can always set up Stunnel on a workstation that won't go to sleep, or on a customer's server that can relay the scan job over port 25 to their actual mail server.
I don't know about over in Scotland, but over here, there are several ISP's that block all connections on port 25.
I am, however, curious why you're only interested in port 25 solutions?
Side note:
GMX? I don't know about now, but I broke all ties with that service several years ago, when I was using it as a workaround for some of my clients, and their server went down for at least 6 months straight!! What a nightmare that created!
Might be using an older MFP that does not support SMTP over SSL. It would have been nice if he had identified what MFP was being used.
I do not know about current but a coupe of years our web services were hosted by GoDaddy. Their email server also supported SMTP on port 80.
That's sort of what I was getting at. If it doesn't support SSL, there's a bunch of other options on other ports.
The Smtp2go service runs on ports 587, 2525 or 8025, and I've never had a problem with it.
Most Web hosting services that I've come across also offer an non-SSL solution over a number of ports other than 25. I set one up just recently on GO Daddy using port 80 (as you said), and Host Papa's another one that comes to mind using port 587.
