Security software may expose you to hacking

If you or any of your customers use Kaspersky Lab security software, here is an article that you need to read.

If you have this security software, remove it RIGHT NOW | Komando.com

Right on Slimslob! We dropped Kaspersky a couple of years ago when we reviewed our server logs and found suspicious intrusions by Kaspersky to files that it had no privileges to and forwarded them to their servers. It made us very apprehensive and we canceled a contract with two years to go on it to get out! Best Money spent!

It's a sad state of affairs for Kaspersky because they have had one of the biggest research teams in the areas of malware and software vulnerabilities. Obviously the company has denied the claims, but being headquartered in Russia, it wouldn't surprise me if Russian security groups like the FSB (the replacement for the KGB) haven't implanted workers into the company, or bought off engineers to implant something malicious.

Overall, it's worth noting that it does shed light on the entire antivirus industry: AV software all but changes the kernel of any operating system it's installed on, and has access to every file on the system. Look at the issues found in Norton's antivirus last year, which all but made the software useless (being in IT now, I'd argue that Norton and Symantec are among the worst AV products): Google Found Symantec and Norton Vulnerabilities 'As Bad As It Gets' Avast has had issues as well: Avast Patches Vulnerability in SafeZone Tool | SecurityWeek.Com and the recent infection of a version of cCleaner. It all just goes to show, just relying on a security product doesn't guarantee any kind of safety.
