Creating SMB Scan to File on Windows computers

    Hey Troops,

With all the posts regarding Windows SMB not working lately (Thanks a BUNCH Microsoft!!), I was reminded of a step-by-step walkthrough I created for new techs on how to configure SMB Scan to File on a Windows computer..... Take notes kids, it's not for the squeamish!!

    Manual SMB Walkthrough (Windows Computer)

Creating a hidden user for the copier (Windows “Pro” Versions only)

    - Right-click “Computer”, and click on “Manage.
    - In the left side panel, select “Local Users and Groups”
    - In the right panel, double-click the “Users Folder”
    - Right-Click and choose “New User”
    - Give the user a name, and a password, then Un-check the “User must change password” box.
(Give it a User Name and Password at your company's discretion...but keep it the same for future reference!)
    - Put a check mark in “User Cannot Change Password” and “Password Never Expires” boxes.
    - Click the “Create” button, then close the New User dialogue box.
    - Right-Click the user you just created, and select “Properties”.
    - Click the “Member Of” tab, click on the word “User”, and then click the “Remove” Button. Then “Apply/OK”. (This will hide the new user name from any Welcome Screen)

    Creating a Scan Folder

    - Open up “Computer”, and Double-Click the “C:” drive.
    - Right-click and select “New Folder”, and name it “scans”.
    - Right-click the “scans” folder and select “Properties”.
    - Click the “Sharing” tab, then click on the “Share” button.
    - Select “Everyone” from the drop down list, click “Add” and make it able to Read/Write.
    - Click the “Share” button.
    - Click the “Security” tab, and click “Edit”, then click the “Add” button.
    - Type in the name of the User you created, and click “OK”, then check the “Full Control” box.
    - Click “Apply/OK”, then click “Close”.
    - Right-click the “Scans” folder, and click “Send To/Desktop” to create a shortcut.

Windows Firewall Settings to allow Scans

    - Click “Start/ Control Panel”.
    - Click “Windows Firewall” and on the right side click “Advanced Settings”
    - On the left, click “Inbound Rules”.
    - Scroll down to “File and Printer Sharing”, select all the ones related to “SMB-In” and “NB”, and Enable those.
    - Scroll down to “Network Discovery” and Enable the ones related to “NB” as well.

Wow... Your notes are...thorough. Good job.Creating SMB Scan to File on Windows computers

Well first things first. The new windows OS has SMBv1 disabled, and only has SMBv2 enabled.

Does your copier use SMBv2? Or SMBv1?

    Yeah... I have a tendency to OVER "Man-splain" sometimes...LOL!!

I did neglect to add a note to make sure the network connection was configured for "NetBIOS over TCP/IP". Micro$oft has decided to default everything to "NetBIOS over DHCP", and that doesn't play well with SMB scanning. It also wreaks havoc on Network Discovery too.
