Hey Troops,
With all the posts regarding Windows SMB not working lately (Thanks a BUNCH Microsoft!!), I was reminded of a step-by-step walkthrough I created for new techs on how to configure SMB Scan to File on a Windows computer..... Take notes kids, it's not for the squeamish!!
Manual SMB Walkthrough (Windows Computer)
Creating a hidden user for the copier (Windows “Pro” Versions only)
- Right-click “Computer”, and click on “Manage.
- In the left side panel, select “Local Users and Groups”
- In the right panel, double-click the “Users Folder”
- Right-Click and choose “New User”
- Give the user a name, and a password, then Un-check the “User must change password” box.
(Give it a User Name and Password at your company's discretion...but keep it the same for future reference!)
- Put a check mark in “User Cannot Change Password” and “Password Never Expires” boxes.
- Click the “Create” button, then close the New User dialogue box.
- Right-Click the user you just created, and select “Properties”.
- Click the “Member Of” tab, click on the word “User”, and then click the “Remove” Button. Then “Apply/OK”. (This will hide the new user name from any Welcome Screen)
Creating a Scan Folder
- Open up “Computer”, and Double-Click the “C:” drive.
- Right-click and select “New Folder”, and name it “scans”.
- Right-click the “scans” folder and select “Properties”.
- Click the “Sharing” tab, then click on the “Share” button.
- Select “Everyone” from the drop down list, click “Add” and make it able to Read/Write.
- Click the “Share” button.
- Click the “Security” tab, and click “Edit”, then click the “Add” button.
- Type in the name of the User you created, and click “OK”, then check the “Full Control” box.
- Click “Apply/OK”, then click “Close”.
- Right-click the “Scans” folder, and click “Send To/Desktop” to create a shortcut.
Windows Firewall Settings to allow Scans
- Click “Start/ Control Panel”.
- Click “Windows Firewall” and on the right side click “Advanced Settings”
- On the left, click “Inbound Rules”.
- Scroll down to “File and Printer Sharing”, select all the ones related to “SMB-In” and “NB”, and Enable those.
- Scroll down to “Network Discovery” and Enable the ones related to “NB” as well.
