Unable To Connect Remote Desktop from W-XP to W10

Hi guys,

I would like to connect with remote desktop from W-XP to W10, but it doesn't work. Opposite W10 to XP works fine. Are there any limitations, or am I doing it wrong?

This XP computer is for safety reasons NOT connected to the Internet, otherwise I could use TeamViewer. TeamViewer using only local LAN doesn't work either.

From what I’ve found, it sounds like you may need to enable SMB v1 on the Windows 10 machine.

Worth a shot (although not exactly secure).

On the XP are you logged in as an administrator and does that administrator has a password?

Is it XP Professional ?

Am I understanding correctly that you're wanting to remote into a PC that is on your local network? I would think that is obviously the case since the XP computer isn't connected to the internet. What security concerns do you have?

Billy I don't have any security issues, but in XP it says:

"The remote computer requires network level authentication" or WTTE

So obviously XP does not have NLA or so...., though it's XP-Professional

Are both Windows Versions correctly licensed? Do you have Pro verison for both? Activated Remote Access on both machines?

There should be no other setting needed.

Others have mentioned to deactivate NLA, you can do it my test showed you dont have to:

Step 1: Log in as an admin

You can use any account that has local administrative rights.

Step 2: Check for update compliance

For Windows XP to be able to use NLA, it must first be updated to SP3. Additionally, I suggest installing the RDP v.7 update as well.

Step 3: Open the registry editor

Run regedit as Administrator.

Step 4: Navigate to and modify the registry keys

There are two keys to change. The first is located at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Lsa
You are going to modify the key named 'Security Packages' Add 'tspkg' to the listing of security packages. Do not remove any packages.
The second key is located at:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\SecurityProviders
You are going to modify the key named 'SecurityProviders' Add 'credssp.dll' to the listing of Security Providers.
Close regedit.

Step 5: Restart the computer.

After the restart is complete. Test the NLA functionality by attempting to RDP to a server that only accepts RDP connections from machines that use NLA.
