    Sharp MX3501N

A simple task turned into a very frustrated one. I was able to get one of these Sharps free of charge for my home office in which I need a good quality scanner. I wanted to setup the email option on the copier so that I could scan and send the scan to my email. I was able to connect everything and I can easily use the web interface using the IP settings of 192.168.0.17. I am using my simple GMAIL account for email and did my research on the settings and am using the following settings. At first, it worked usually. Then more and more, I kept on getting the error of CE-00, server not found. It is very inconsistent.

Lately, I cannot get it to work at all. My concern is that it worked initially with these settings, and therefore, the problem is hardware related, not software. Any thoughts or insight would be appreciated.

I have also tried to use the included software, Sharpdesk. It sees the scanner, but when I go to acquire images, it says that it cannot connect to the scanner. Makes no sense to me. Either of them will be sufficient for my needs, but one has to work and neither is right now.

    Thank you

Firstly, well done on getting a free color copier! Are you on any sort of service contract? I hope so, 'cos its going to hurt come service time! Those machines need alot of consumables/parts.

In relation to your scanning problems, Gmail requires SSL Encryption for SMTP and POP3 .

Under the SMTP settings, there may be a tick box marked SSL, tick this.

Set the port number to 465 or 587.

If there is no such option, update the machine to the latest firmware. Alot of scan issues were sorted out with newer firmware.

Other than that, wait for Tmaged to come online. He's the connectivity God around these parts. I'm not really IT based, primarily service tech. I've got IT specialists I can pass these jobs over if needed to.

Or, use the USB memory scan function if you need to use this machine now. Connect a USB thumb drive to the rear USB port, select Image Send, change mode to USB memory scan. It will scan as a JPG or PDF onto your thumb drive.

It gets even better. I cannot find where an update of firmware is an option. I have looked and looked and then did a scan for all of the manuals for "firmware" with no results.

The advice given here all looks good to me. SMTP server should be smtp.gmail.com like Dustin said. Then follow Wazza's instructions & change the port to 465 and use an SSL connection. Just remember, the connection test means it found the mail server, not that it authenticated. In my experience, unsupported means secure vs. nonsecure.
You won't be able to update the firmware without having the firmware & maintenance codes.
    Hope that helps !

Thanks Tony... I knew I was close.

Tomsocal....Print out the system settings page, and let us know what the firmware versions say. As you are not a tech, you will be unable to update the firmware, but I can advise if the version on the machine should be updated.

You are running firmware from September 2006. Its very old. There have been alot of system changes in all the newer versions. It definitely should be updated. There are pages of information of the changes done.

Yes, that does not surprise me. This copier was owned by a home builder that went bust in 2007 or so. One of the many. Thanks again.
