NETGEAR Modem USB-Drive as Remote File Server.

Does any one know how to set up a NETGEAR modem USB-Drive so as to be able to access it from a remote PC ie. over the net ?

I want to be able to scan to the USB drive at my residence and store work material to the Drive. Then when I arrive home I just power my PC up and read the USB-Drive. It would save setting up a dedicated PC server just for a couple of files per week. Not to mention wasted resources.

I've been over it with various configurations and still can't see it from my work PC.
I have been on the NetGear site....

The problem child modem is DG834GU......

    the overly simple instructions.
one the computer that the drive is attached to has to be turned on.
you have to set up port forwarding on the router and in its firewall.
the pc has to have a static ip address.
the drive has to be shared
then from work type in the ipaddressort(that was setup to forward to pc) then browse for the share.

The other option is to setup an ftp software that when logged into points to the usb drive. You will still need the above setup done but this will allow some security as to a username and password with restrictions as to which directory you can access.
And Star Trek was just a tv show...yeah right!

Yer I played with most of what you have said. I still couldn't get it working. I might do a firmware update.

Why do I have to have my PC turn on. The router is turned on configured and attached to the internet.
I don't really want a PC running at home for the small amount of time I would use it.
Why can't the router manufacture give the USB-Drive have a static IP itself ? What a brilliant way to have a private mail box ?

    thanks anyway.

Color is not 4 times harder... it's 65,000 times harder. They call it "TECH MODE" for a reason. I have manual's and firmware for ya, course... you are going to have to earn it.

The only interface the usb drive has to the network is the pc. If the pc is off then no usb drive. Now if you had a nas drive then you would not need the pc turned on.

There are routers out there that have USB interfaces for printers and disk drives, the Apple Airport Base Station is the one that immmediately comes to mind. I'm sure there are others but I can't name them specifically.

My Belkin does it. I've plugged in my 360 gig drive to it and it worked.
