I just thought I'd share this. I had an account that had off site IT support and many printing issues. They called a lot for "can't print". I'd get there and print fine via crossover, call their IT and have them kick the print server (120 miles away), then everyone could print again. Sometimes they were unable to ping the printer from their location even though I could locally. A simple solution would to be to have everyone print locally, but their IT didn't like that idea. And, of course, nobody had admin rights so I couldn't setup up printers locally to take their antiquated POS print server or the long loop out of the equation.
I setup everyone with IPP and all has been fine since. I didn't need admin rights "add the network printer", use the ipp url and recycled the print driver. It just occurred to me I could have used the old windows smb port too. Oh well, they aren't having anymore issues with printing anyway.
