Printing to simple network and using 3G USB Dongle for internet

    Hello Everyone,

I have a client that is using 3G USB Dongle and they haven't got any routers in place. So I placed a little 8-port switch on a basic 192.168.1.250 for the copier and 192.168.1.1 .2 .3 ..etc for all the MAC's now they want to use the internet through 3G USB Dongles a new problem came up. As soon as they installed the USB dongle it took out the connection with the LAN.

Question is How to configure the copier( KM6030) and the settings on MAC so it does have internet and local network for copier at the same time.

Thanks for any insights, would really appreciate it.

Don't know about MAC but I had this problem using Windows and the solution was to leave the Gateway address blank in the LAN settings.

      Tried it ...does not work/

tried on mac Using manual IP settings of
      ip :192.168.1.2
      sub :255.255.255.0

same for copier with IP: 192.168.1.250

      did not work

then tried the USB dongle ip settigns :
      IP: 169.254.163.222
      S : 255.255.0.0

      copier : 169.254.163.254
      sub : 255.255.0.0

      and also did not work

wondering if sharing of internet through the mac would work and that way the mac would act as proxy and could possibly talk to the printer, just not sure how to set this up.

OWL any experience on this one?

An IP range of 169.254.x.x is invalid, it means the machine could not find the DHCP server. You will need to reconfigure the dongle settings, make sure the dongle is set to configure using DHCP. You may need to install third-party software for it to retrieve a DHCP address.

Your other settings should work. Check that the IP range/subnet combination does not conflict with the dongles, as long as you use a private range it shouldn't. Make sure you don't set a Router address (aka gateway), DNS, WINS, proxies or any other settings. I would also disable IPv6, just in case.

A 169.xxx IP address is a self assigned address: more than likely, the USB dongles are not connected to the cellular network. Anytime you enter into a simultaneous network configuration, you're just asking for trouble for the most part.

            Huawei E3231 dongle .
So my question is rather is it actually possible, or I am just wasting time with research ? Sorry if it sounds so blunt, I just hav a feeling it is going to be a bit more complicated then I initially thought.

Thanks for any insights and suggestions, I would like to make a list of suggestions and try all at the same time when I go to see my client.

Thanks Again..really appreciate it. If we get it to work I will make a manual on how this was set up and hopefully someone may use it later.

              ..hm

I believe the dongles are set on DHCP to auto-assign them selfs with the PC or MAC, but if I understand it correctly both machine and USB are using the same network card and it is unfortunately the Ethernet which I have to use for the copier and USB dongle knocks off Ethernet settings, as it is using the same interface.

Have you tried to connect through USB dongle to the internet and at the same time connecting to LAN through cable?

If this was my site, I would tell the customer to get a 3G router. Think of it like a DSL Modem but instead of have a DSL line, you put a SIM card in. You can then network everything together into one central spot, including the copier which fixes the issue of trying to run two separate networks.
Please don't ask me for firmware or service manuals as refusal often offends.

Yes I know, Thank Owl for popping by, I already have experience with 3g Routers..that is avery easy setup when they go for that option, they just don't want due to short rental of devices and there is maybe opportunity for me to set up a company that can provide this kind of services especially when the EE network have just been launched in UK.

Would you know how to set up a PC or Mac that can act as a Interner proxy using the USB dongle as access to internet and the rest would run just from a switch..hmm now I think about it, I still may need a router of some sort What a head ache

Going for a hunt..hope they sell some 4G (EE) Routers

Thanks for any response regards to this issue. Cheers!

Re: Printing to simple network and using 3G USB Dongle for internet

In Windows it's called "Internet Connection Sharing" and is as simple as enabling the feature on the NIC connected to all other devices. You then need to make sure that the ICS firewall permission is enabled on Windows 7 and up devices.

In Mac's you can find the same thing in System Preferences > Sharing and go to the Internet Tab. Here's a couple of websites that explain it:

Share your Mac's internet connection wirelessly
