"sudo -s launchctl load -w /System/Library/LaunchDaemons/ftp.plist" (leave out the "s) to enable FTP. I got this from the MAC support site and it worked just fine.

Of course 10.8 may be different, but there should be directions on how to enable FTP on the MAC site.

10.7 and 10.8 uses the same ftp enable string in terminal however you may watch for shortest destination root so you don't expose too much of the shared folders.
.OK Google! ... will I need Berrocca this morning?

Scan to a LION - YouTube

I made this video to train my guys with the Kyoceras..

I apologize for bad quality.. And it doesn't really start until 35 seconds in.

PS: I always do it with a static IP or DHCP reservation; at least with these Kyoceras, it just won't resolve Mac hostnames; your result I think will vary with the make/model.

Annoyingly the only way to get SMB scanning to work on 10.7 and above is for the MFP manufactures to update their firmware to support the SMB level the newer Mac OS's use.

I've been using the FTP utility for FTP scanning, makes things easy, but you can only scan back to the users home drive:
