    HP 4000 /Configuration page question

    Hi
I'm not making this up,8 computers connected to a HP 4000 by way of parallel port thru a netgear connector.Has work for quite some time,
Customer called today and said cant print to machine thru any computers,I went today, nothing stuck in Que on any machine but says on computer error in printing,I printed a configuration page and it dosnt refer to network any where on report,Since there is no jet direct installed there is no option on menu to print network status,I cant remember but should the configuration page mention something about the network that's connected.
    THANKS ANDY

Nope. As far as the HP LJ4000 is concerned, you have an LPT1 local printer (no network). I don't have anything using parallel ports any more, but I would suspect the parallel to TCP/IP print server as your most likely point of failure.

It appears that you can still buy such things:

Do you still have a laptop with a parallel port to test print with? I suppose you could buy a USB to parallel print server for your laptop, but how many times are you going to need it after this service call? Hopefully never. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

The netgear connector has an IP address. It won't be obvious, you may need some freeware like AngryIP Scanner to find out what it is. Then connect to that IP address thru a web connection. See if there is anything you can reset.

You can still buy an external jet direct but Im sure it's time for the client to upgrade before you start reliviing the 1990s.

I would imagine that Netgear box has some way to print the current config. A button or something. Most external network adapters do.

Another option may be a Parallel to USB converter, which will allow you to plug the parallel cable into a USB port on your notebook to test with: C2G USB to DB25 IEEE-1284 Parallel Adapter Cable - Parallel adapter - USB - IEEE 1284 - blue : Display Solutions | Dell
It will cost you less than $15, (shipping will vary, of course), but could prove itself very useful should you ever need to troubleshoot a parallel port issue again. (Really big IF on that one.)

If your notebook has a standard PCMCIA port on it, you can probably find a PCMCIA to Parallel adapter for about $20.

Note that most of the newer notebooks over the last few years will not have a PCMCIA slot, however, and the last ones that did used a new standard.
