Sounds used. And I would just replace the carriage PCA. If it's a bad encoder, that would take care of it.

Did you try dropping the service station a bit as a test? I know it's unlikely but I would rule out the service station causing some interference.

That is our price from HP. 15%? discount for being a partner. We have to purchase so much from HP to maintain our status.

No, I didn't drop the station. Everything passed the diags. The station homed, capped, uncapped, etc all while the carriage was sitting on top of it. I would have thought that if something was rubbing or in the way, the diag would have halted and failed.

I'll order the PCA and report back. It's been difficult getting to this customer as they are a non-contract customer. Have had several plotters on my plate lately and I'm the only tech who can work on them.

Thanks everyone for suggestions on this head scratcher.

What part number was it? I'm just curious if it's the carriage alone, without the PCA or flex cables, etc. That price just doesn't sound right.

    Good luck!

    I've conceded.

Kiran - Carriage part number is CK837-67027. Manual says it includes everything. MSRP is $155.87. We get a $54.55 discount.

I replaced the carriage PCA. Same error! The ONLY thing I didn't do, mainly due to having to balance cost, is remove the carriage and inspect it. I took a can of air to it. Underneath. Where the encoder strip goes through. Same error.

    What I did:

Re-cleaned the encoder strip and inspected
Ran the Starwheel diag - PASSED
Ran the Service Station diag - PASSED
Ran the Carriage diag - PASSED
Ran the APS or PPS (whichever you call it) - PASSED
Removed all covers, including the cleanout to check for obstructions - NONE

Paper moves smoothly through the paper path, even underneath the carriage. SOMETHING had to happen that I'm not being told when I found the blue roll hub on backwards and the printhead cover unlocked.

Another agency says they can have the plotter they don't use.

Thanks again for all the suggestions and help on this one.

Hmm, I would have put money on the carriage PCA being the problem.

Also on the price, I remember when they changed the trailing cable on the Z series, you had to buy the carriage and cable together and it was over a thousand dollars. I'm realizing that isn't the case here.

I'd go down the path of replacing the encoder strip, trailing cable, then the main PCA. Something is making it think the carriage is stuck. I understand if it's become a lost cause though. I hate these kinds of problems!

So that's it? We don't get to find out the ending?

    Grrrr...

Let's watch a mystery thriller, and then turn the TV off right before the climax.

Sorry everyone. I'd love to spend more time on things like this, except, I think the company would wonder where I'm spending my time. *wink*

It drives me crazy when I can't even determine WHAT is causing the problem.
