    Designjet T1120 Phantom 86:01

Have a T1120 that is getting a "phantom" 86:01 jam error. Was told it happened after loading a new roll.

    Found once onsite:
The blue hub on the roll was backwards
    Printhead cover wasn't locked

Fixed both of those, error continues.

    Tried further:
    Cleaned the encoder strip
Checked to make sure the cutter was installed correctly
    Ran starwheel diag - PASSED
Ran service station diag - PASSED

All good. Am able to smoothly move paper back and forth through the paper path with no resistance. Checked both ends and under the carriage for any debris.

    How plotter acts upon bootup:

    Disk check
    Carriage give a quick stutter
Carriage goes to left end, then, back to service station
    Starwheel assembly actuates
Plotter throws 86:01 after maybe 1-3 second delay

    Any ideas?

    Thanks!

Hmmmmmmm. Just checked CSN. Found "HP Designjet T Printer series - Carriage Touching in the Right Front Trim". It talks about checking the carriage rear bushing. Oiling, if necessary and the Pen to Paper Space (PPS) solenoid. The PPS solenoid is on the same side as the service station which is where it seems to halt.

I'll have another look and report back.

I think the last time I had one like that I ended up replacing the carriage.

It throws the error when it's over the service station? Was the service station replaced? It may be installed incorrectly. You can lower it down but keep it connected, and see if it boots, then you know it's some interference with the service station.

I'd also check the encoder strip very closely.. take it out and hold it up to the light, make sure the marks aren't damaged or missing in that area.

Try booting it with all the supplies removed, too.

Thanks Kiran. Nope, I've been the only one who's performed service on this plotter. The only other work I did was replacing the belt last September.

I ran additional tests. I ran the carriage test, and the PRS test. I removed the right hand cover when I ran the PRS test to watch the part move. Both of these tests passed. While I had it off, I cleaned the encoder strip again really good with just a water dampened towel. I put a flashlight up to it and examined it closely. It looked okay. I also closely checked again for any paper debris. Still couldn't find anything.

    engel - the carriage PCA?

    I'm stumped on this one.

I had a Z3200 that kept stopping with this code over the service station... after the customer had tried to replace the belt. I fixed the belt placement, and then tried replacing the encoder strip. I made sure everything looked right on the carriage. Finally, I figured I'd start with the carriage PCA. But the customer was already in a fighting mood because I hadn't fixed it yet, and I didn't feel like dealing with any 'maybe's. Actually, I was still just guessing. Anyway, I went with the entire carriage unit, and that ended up fixing it.

Is the rear carriage bushing where it belongs? It's the same as on the 500/800s.

Kiran - Yeah. I checked that rear bushing. It's working as it should be.

Wow! Whole carriage assembly for $101 (HP)!? Am I or it missing something?
