"This needs a new carriage unit. It might or might not need other parts as well, but let's start with the carriage."

I'd tell them the same. Also, a long shot (and probably won't make a difference), but, is the firmware up-to-date?

Well i tried a new carriage unit now and it still hasn't fixed it, The firmware is up to date also.
