    I don't know why this only happened on half the page, but it turned to be the bearing, somehow it came unattached so basically wasn't even 'there', weird! But now it works great, thanks for all the help to everyone!

    the carriage bearing, edit 'bushing' (even though it's not really a bearing, guess I should have said bushing), it just clips on the top back of the carriage so it slides nicely in it's track and also sets the printhead height by bringing the back of the carriage down, thus pivoting it so the heads raise higher.

    I used this fast easy method to check and fix (skip to about 2:22)

    yes, that's what prompted me to check that the next time I was able to get to the customer, without his suggestion, I'd probably still be pulling my hair out.
