    HP 4050 tray 2 jamming

Oldie but goodie...rather my customers have old HP's like this then the new junk HP is selling!

I replaced rollers in this machine almost a year ago. Customer said tray 2 was jamming again. To get any papers to feed they have to keep paper tray full, and even with that it could still jam. Tray 1 bypass is working fine.

Only things that comes to mind:

Does this machine have a tray 2 paper feed solenoid that sticks like the 4250?

Can't remember if this has a back stop that get loose in the paper casst like the 4250's have?

    Any other ideas appreciated.

    Thanks in advance

It's always been rollers for me. I think it does have the pickup solenoid though. =^..^=
If you'd like a serious answer to your request:
    1) demonstrate that you've read the manual
    2) demonstrate that you made some attempt to fix it.
    3) if you're going to ask about jams include the jam code.
    4) if you're going to ask about an error code include the error code.
    5) You are the person onsite. Only you can make observations.

have you taken the seperator roller torque limiter apart and dumped out some of the graphite??? i like to watch the feed from the back of the tray to see what it does.
if you're not familiar with this, the torque limiter is the piece next to the roller. pops apart by light pressure. the inside is magnetic, so you have to remove the graphite (or whatever it is) by pinching and removing. old trick but i still do that first when i see one of these

    +1 - boscru

Yes, they have the good old solenoids. Have re-padded several over the years on these.

    Hi
I have had problems a few times with the Torque limiter being the problem,Try swapping with other tray
or order a new one which is something you may want to replace every few years.

    Hi
I agree. The D shaped rollers are easy to replace and for under $20 you can get OEM set.
Just include cost in your maintenance kit price.I replace every PM and it avoids problems
    down the road

Usually the torques limiter. Or as HP calls in - clutch.

Do you have the actual error code that is displaying when the jam occurs. I've seen similar type jams where tray 1 feeds ok but tray 2 intermittently jams with a 41.5 error. That usually points to a bad clutch on the paper feed assy (the set of rollers located behind the MPT assy). Also make sure no foreign objects got lodged under back of the lift plate in the cassette and are obstructing the plate from rising all of the way up to the rollers when the tray is no longer full.

I think you can see the rollers turn from the back of the printer.

If the D rollers turn and don't pick up paper, then replace them.

If they turn and keep turning even though the paper is being fed, then repair the solenoid. You have to 'split' the machine. It's not a big deal, except this machine is so old, shit breaks & falls apart as you're working on it. I'm getting to the point where I'll just tell people with 4000, 4050, & 4100 that their machine is too old--it can't be fixed.

But there's also a reg roller clutch that can cause problems.
