This is a Color LaserJet Pro MFP M477fdw , serial number is VNB8JBN44W , mfg. date 10-21-2016.

The printing mechanism works fine (it prints out the "Wireless Network Test Report").
But when the printer is powered on, the screen shows the error message:
Code:
The product is unable to calibrate. Close the lid and remove paper from the document feeder or flatbed.
Steps taken so far:

  • Followed steps for clearing paper from the ADF and flatbed (per Contact HP Customer Support | HP(R) Customer Support... )
  • Followed steps to hard restart the printer
  • Reset the printer to factory defaults
  • Connected printer to wifi
  • Current firmware is 20160331. Attempted firmware update using HP LaserJet Pro Series Windows Firmware Update Utility (20190113)... but update would not complete, I believe due to the error message on printer.
  • Attempted firmware update using printer's settings menu -> wireless setup menu... but update would not complete, I believe due to error message on printer.
  • Following the procedure on page 569 in the MFP M377 repair manual, "Removal and replacement: Integrated scanner assembly", removed the Scanner/ADF unit and reinstalled it, checking for any broken cables. The ribbon cables do not appear broken or kinked.

First question: what is the next step in solving this problem? Mechanically, the printer seems fine, but it is unusable until we solve this problem. This printer sells at Staples for $369... do we have to throw it in the trash, or is it fixable?

1a. If we must replace the entire ADF, what is the most economical way to obtain a replacement (does anyone have a recommended source for a used part?)

Second question: If it is not possible to fix this problem with the ADF, is it possible to remove the scanner/ADF unit altogether and use the printer as if it were an M452 ? What would be the procedure for this?
